So, last night at 9:45 I was able to see the long-awaited third installment of Pirates of the Caribbean. Before I get into my own personal opinions of the movie let me tell you what I thought of Dead Man's Chest. I loved it. I was excited to see where they would go with a sequel to the amazing first movie and I wasn't disappointed. A lot of people were however. I think the reason WHY they were so disappointed is because they were trying to compare DMC (Dead Man's Chest) to the 1st Pirates. YOU CAN'T DO THAT!! If you did try to compare them then you were bound to be disappointed. What people should really do is take the trilogy and compare it to some other movie, perhaps another trilogy. DMC also left an extremely big cliffhanger at the end which people didn't like but with the promise of the third I would've thought that the anger about that would settle down at least a little, it did for me.
So onto the review of AWE (At World's End). It was amazing!!! All the characters were at their best, especially Johnny Depp. It was an action-packed, comedic, tense, emotional, roller-coaster of a ride and I loved every minute of it!! Everything that was left hanging in the second movie was taken care of quite nicely. Does AWE leave room for a 4th? Absolutely, although it's not as big of a cliffhanger as DMC was so even if there isn't a 4th I think the true pirates fans will be okay with how it ended (for the most part). At times the movie left me confused especially when Sao Feng or Tia Dalma were speaking because you couldn't always make out exactly what they were saying. I definitely need to go watch it again so I can understand a couple parts I missed.
I loved the tension between Elizabeth, Captain Jack, and Will at the beginning since where DMC left off, Elizabeth had kissed Jack in order to bind him to the ship which Will saw and took the wrong way. The tension between Will and Jack gets relieved a little when Will finds out the truth but that only makes the tension between Will and Elizabeth stronger. It was great, I loved the tension and was on the edge of my seat to see how it would all get resolved. I was not disappointed at all when it finally does get resolved towards the end during the best fight/battle scene I've ever seen in a movie. The maelstrom comes and The Black Pearl is fighting against the Flying Dutchman, all the while looking like their going to go down into the ocean which is turning into what can only be described as a huge toilet bowl being flushed. During this battle while both Will & Elizabeth are sword-fighting the bad guys, Will asks Elizabeth to marry him and she responds "I don't think now's the best time!" He responds, "Now may be the only time! I love you. I made my choice. What's yours?" Then they ask Barbossa who is sword-fighting also to marry them, right then. So amidst the fighting Barbossa marries them and gets to the end of the speech and says "You may now kiss..." (more sword-fighting) Then he frustratingly yells "Just kiss!!" The kiss that follows is the best on-screen kiss I've seen in a LONG time. Having it amidst the swordfighting just made it that more intense. It was awesome!
Almost all of the main characters had their own subplots which some people thought was too much. It definitely was a lot to try to take in but I'm glad they let more characters have a bigger role in the story. All the characters had great lines and I found myself laughing even when it was supposed to be a "serious" moment. The comedic relief was well-written and well-delivered by the actors. Even the monkey has a bigger role and makes you laugh pretty hard a couple times.
The part that I thought was a little cheesy was when Tia Dalma (aka Calypso) turns into a giant when she is no longer bound by the brethren. I thought that was a little too much but when I thought how I would've done it differently I honestly can't think of a better way.
Now onto the highly controversial subject of Will Turner getting stabbed in the heart by Davy Jones. Many fans of Orlando Bloom are bound to hate the trilogy forever just because of that part. When I watched it happen I was shocked and seriously had my mouth hanging open during the entire scene. I couldn't believe it! He was just married to Elizabeth and now he DIES?! That's horrible! When he gets stabbed Captain Jack is holding Davy Jones' heart about ready to stab it but then after Will gets stabbed then you see Jack take the heart along with the dagger over to where Will lies dying (tear) to have Will stab Davy Jones' heart instead, therefore making him captain of the Flying Dutchman. It was definitely a bittersweet moment for me because Will can now keep his promise to his father and free him. But now he can only be on land every 10 years and therefore only be with Elizabeth every 10 years. The end was great though as they finally get to have their time together and I loved Will's line when he says "I'm going to need the other one." (when referring to his boot which Elizabeth is now wearing.)
I hope everyone stayed till the end of the credits because there was something at the end (there always is with Pirates movies). On the screen it reads "Ten Years Later" and you see Elizabeth and a young boy around the age of 10 (surprise, surprise) walking to the shore and they see Captain Will on the Flying Dutchman coming towards them and you see Elizabeth and the young boy smile at each other. Will can now be reunited with Elizabeth and will get to meet his son for the first time. This was also a bittersweet moment and I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about Will's fate. Some people on the message boards have said that if Elizabeth stays true to Will during their ten years apart and is there to meet him after the 10 years (which we saw she was) then Will can be freed from being the captain of the Flying Dutchman. Which expains why Davy Jones' felt so betrayed by Calypso because at the end of his 10 years he went to their meeting spot and she wasn't there to meet him. That part was mentioned in the movie but I don't think the part about the Captain of the Flying Dutchman being freed if his love was true was mentioned though, unless it was during one of the parts I couldn't understand what Tia Dalma was saying. I hope that theory is true because I'm a sucker for happy endings but the Flying Dutchman always has to have a captain so I don't know how it would work out.
Overall, I absolutely LOVED At World's End and I'm going to go see it again and again! AMAZING!
